Black Eyed Peas Curry
Black Eyed Pea is also known as Lobia or Chawli. This is a basic recipe. Easy and simple to make and also a healthy and protein rich dish for the whole family.
Black Eyed Peas Curry
Ingredients
- 2 cups black eyed peas
- 1 large tomato
- 1 large onion
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 3-4 tsp coriander leaves
- Half tsp dry mango powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- Half tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 2-3 pinches of asafoetida
- Salt as per taste
- 2 tsp oil
- 2 cups water
Recipe
Soak the peas for 3-4 hours.
Finely chop tomato and onion.
Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds to it and let them crackle add onions to it. Cook onions till they become soft and add tomatoes to it. Cook tomatoes till you get a paste like texture and oil starts oozing out of it.
Now start adding dry spices asafoetida, red chili powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and garam masala. Cook the spices for a minute and add the black eyed peas to it mix well. Add water and salt as per taste and mix well.
Pressure cook it for 1-2 whistles. I cooked for 2 whistles.
Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves and server with rice, roti, paratha, naan or tortilla.
*Note - You can also add curry leaves to it, this adds flavor to your dish.
*Note - Initially cook the dish for 1 whistle check if it is cooked, if not you can cook for 1 more whistle.
*Note - You can also prepare this dish in a pan or wok, but it takes more time to get cooked nicely.
