Tomato Onion Uttapam

South Indian cuisine is much loved across India, especially its wide variety of breakfast dishes like Idli, Dosa, Uttapams. However there is much more to South Indian cuisine including a large variety of rice dishes, one-dish meals, main course dishes, accompaniments like chutneys, pickles, salads, etc.
Today I am sharing one of my favorite South Indian dishes: Tomato Onion Uttapam.

Batter

Ingredients
  • 3 cups of rice
  • 1 cup of skinless black gram (Urad dal)
  • Fenugreek seeds 1 tsp
  • Salt as per taste
Recipe

Soak rice, black gram & fenugreek seeds separately for 7-8 hours. Blend them in a grinder to a smooth paste, add salt and leave them to ferment for 7-8 hours or overnight.
Our batter is ready. You can use the same to prepare Dosa.

Uttapam

Ingredients
  • Uttapam batter
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 1 tomato finely chopped
  • 3-4 green chillies finely chopped
  • Coriander (cilantro) leaves finely chopped
  • Oil for greasing
  • Salt as per taste
  • Water 1 cup
Recipe

Mix the onions, tomatoes, green chillies, coriander in a bowl. Add the Uttapam batter with some water. Do not add too much water as we need the pouring consistency of the batter. Add salt as per taste.
Grease the dosa tava or skillet with little oil and put it on heat. After the tava is hot enough, lower the flame and pour 2 ladles of batter over it and spread it forming a circular shape of the batter. You will know if it is ready to be flipped over when you can lift the side using a spatula and the color is light golden brown. Then flip it up to the other side and cook till its done. Once your tava is nice & hot it hardly takes 2-3 mins for each Uttapam to get cooked.
You can make more Uttapams from the remaining batter repeating the same procedure.

You can have these Uttapams with coconut chutney, any chutney of your choice, sambhar or tomato sauce :)

*Note - If you are using a non stick tava or skillet you don't need to grease it with oil & no need to put extra oil over it.

*Note - You can use the same batter for preparing crispy dosas...will be sharing recipe soon :)
