Misal Pav

Misal Pav one of the traditional Maharashtrian dish and also a popular Mumbai street food! Misal originates from Kolhapur and there we get the spiciest taste of misal.
Misal is a spicy curry made with mixed sprouts or moth beans and pav are buns. Misal is garnished with Farsan (mix child) and is topped with onions, tomatoes, coriander leaves and spicy oil.
At some places Misal is served with buttermilk or yogurt.



Misal Pav
Ingredients
  • 2 cups mixed sprouts
  • 4 onions
  • 4 tomatoes
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 cup coriander leaves
  • 2-3 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tsp cumin powder
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • Salt as per taste
  • 2 pinches of asafoetida (hing)
  • 2-3 cups water

Recipe

Soak the mixed sprouts of your choice in water for 6-7 hours.

Wash them in running water atlas 2 times. Then pressure cook the sprouts for 2 whistles.

Finely chop 2 onions, 2 tomatoes and coriander leaves.

Heat oil in a pan or wok and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds to it. Let them crackle and add onions to it. Sauté onions till they become soft and add tomatoes to it. Add few pinches of salt to it so the tomatoes will be cooked faster. Cook tomatoes till we get paste like texture of it.

Now add ginger garlic paste and bay leaves to it and mix well. Cook for 2 minutes more. Add half of the chopped coriander leaves to it and mix well.
Later add the dry spices to it red chili powder, turmeric powder, garam masala, cumin powder, coriander power and mix well. Cook the masalas and all ingredients for 2 minutes.

Now add the pressure cooked mixed sprouts to it. Add 2 cups of water to it and add salt as per taste and mix well. Let it boil for 3-4 minutes.
Switch off the flame.


Spicy Oil
Ingredients
  • 3-4 tsp red chili powder
  • Half cup oil
  • Half tsp cumin seeds
Recipe

Heat oil in a wok and add cumin seeds to it and let them crackle nicely. Now switch off the flame and let the oil cool down for 2-3 minutes. Later add the red chili powder to it and cool down completely.



Serving -

Finely chop remaining 2 onions and 2 tomatoes.

Take the spicy curry in a serving bowl. Pour the farina (mix chivda) over it. Garnish with onions, tomatoes and coriander leaves. Pour a tsp of spicy oil.
Put pav (buns) in a serving plate. Put the spicy curry bowl in a plate. Serve with buttermilk, yogurt or lemon piece.




*Note - Misal Pav is a spicy dish, but still you can make it less spicy if you want and you can keep the spicy oil ready so people who want to eat spicy they can pour spicy oil over their misal.
